Saturday 1st September 2012. Latest News from Malawi.

Father Joel in Zomba Malawi has emailed to say that he has received the donation from St. Chad’s of £950 which pays for food for the orphans and the education fees for those attending secondary school.  The orphans are fostered for free by many good hearted families in the surrounding villages.  So any food provided for the orphans indirectly helps these families maintain their care of the orphans.  The arrival  of the donation is timely as the food for the children has just run out.

Fr. Joel sends his sincere thanks and blessings.

The idea of a maize mill business to create their own funding for the orphans has been abandoned after it was realised that four other maize mills had recently set up in the same district making another financially unviable.  So Father Joel and the committee of the Living Bread Organisation (LBO) that look after the orphans’ interests are exploring the idea of a food distribution business.  This would involve delivering food to schools, colleges, clinics etc in the vicinity of Zomba.  They have researched such institutions and found a ready market and now need to save up to buy a vehicle (costing about £3,500).  We approached MACS (the Malawi Association for Christian Support; www.malawimacs.org for funding but they declined saying that they do not buy vehicles).

So Fr. Joel said that the land they bought to site the proposed maize mill will be sold later this year or next so that they make a profit and this will be put towards the cost of a vehicle.
