26th April 2013. A message from Fr. Joel.

I have noticed recently a campaign by Christian Aid to raise money in the U.K. for treated mosquito nets to be provided to children and adults for protection against malaria.

Knowing that Fr. Joel and his daughter have suffered from malaria in the past, I asked whether it was a problem for people in his area generally.  His reply is quite chilling.

A child dies everyday in their region from malaria.

Read his message.

Emails from Fr. Joel Malanda. 24-04-2013 & 25-04-2013.

About the orphaned children with grandmother indeed mosquito nets are a blessing if they can have them urgently. It seems some of the children have HIV and we want them to go to hospital for VCT because they often fall sick and become very weak. The grandmother won’t manage due to illiteracy but as committee we have agreed to do it.

In answer to your question about treated mosquito nets provided by Christian Aid I tried to check Christian Aid yesterday and today here in Malawi haven’t found them but we have mosquito nets here in shops at 7.8 pounds each. The area those children with grandmother are is near lake Chirwa and they have nothing to protect them from malaria which is killing children daily here most. The balance we have from 1200 pounds will help buy them food May and June. These are child headed families and those children am talking please.  In fact we had it in mind but we did not want to burden you for the wonderful work you are doing already thanks.

With best wishes,

Joel
