YOUTH WORKER
INTRODUCING THE YOUTH WORKER

Susie Walker. (susiepwalker@yahoo.co.uk Tel: 07949 557015.)
I am rather older than I guess I'll look to most of you but I think we will leave it as vague as that! I grew up in Sutton but since leaving school have lived and worked in towns all over England.
I have been into God since I was about 5 years old and a keen Crusader attendee. St Martins in the Bullring was my home church and it was them who got me into working with children and young people; work that has always been a passion of mine.
About 12 years ago I joined a convent and became a nun - quite a life I can tell you! I am sorry to report that I wasn't very holy or demure - Whoopi Goldberg would have been proud of me! Seriously, the Religious Life is, when embraced fully, a very profound way of living and of being given over to God and it was hard last year when about 11 of us left the order. It is very different living back out in the world. Incidentally people usually have lots of questions about nuns and what they do and don't do and I am very happy to try and answer those questions so please feel free to ask!
For the last few years of my time in Community I was working in the local parish as Parish Sister and a lot of that work was with children and young people, which, as you can imagine, was perfect for me and of great enjoyment, (well usually anyway!)
Several 'god incidences' have led to my appointment as youth worker for the cluster for a few months and I am excited though challenged by the task. I don't know what your own expectations are but be warned, there are unlikely to be too many highly visible changes by the end of such a short period but hopefully lots will be happening behind the scenes. I hope to work out, with each church individually and with all three churches as a cluster, where things are at, where they might go and how, both in the short and long term. Maybe it is a kind of feasibility study accompanied by some seed sowing and an opportunity to live out in real life the parable of the sower and the seed. I know all three churches have a real desire to encourage young people into the life of your churches and hopefully I can encourage you (and them!) in that desire.
At the moment I am listening and learning from anyone who feels they have anything to say (and from people who think they have nothing to say!). If you would like me to listen to your thoughts on the youth work situation then please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Yours in Jesus,
Susie Walker
